Sanya hotels’ occupancy rates decline despite room rates falling in May
Yalong Bay is home to many luxury hotels
May to September is the traditional off-season for the Hainan tourism market. This year, the off-season has come much earlier than before, and a star-rated hotel at Sanya Yalong Bay even saw a zero occupancy rate.
"The number of tourists we received in May this year was no more than 500, falling by 300 compared with that of last year”, said a member staff at a large travel agency in Hainan. Statistics provided by the travel agency show that hotels in Sanya all lower their room rates during the off-season.
However, it isn’t effective as hotel occupancy rates have remained low. The average hotel occupancy rate of high-end hotels at Yalong Bay is between 20% and 30%, dropping by 10% year on year. What’s worse, a renowned hotel in Sanya even received no visitors at all on one day.
While the international airports in Haikou and Sanya are seeing ever-increasing numbers of passengers, hotel room occupancy rates in Sanya have slid sharply. With the booming real estate industry in Sanya, the hotel industry is being hit. What’s more, the quick development of the hotel industry also contributes to the pressure in the off-season, according to an insider.
