A new regular direct air route between the Chinese mainland’s southern resort city of Sanya and Taipei will be launched on Jan. 11, an airline spokesman said Tuesday.

The new round-trip route will be operated by Hainan Airlines every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a company spokesman said.

The new service will be launched to meet increasing market demand against a backdrop of frequent economic and cultural exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, he said.

Currently, Hainan Airlines operates 26 regular flights every week between five mainland cities — Beijing, Guangzhou, Dalian, Xi’an and Haikou — and Taipei.
