Hainan’s Haitang Bay, a hotspot for international luxury hotels
Haitang Bay is a prime piece of 40km-long beachfront land that sits to the north of Yalong Bay. Haitang Bay is the hotspot as far as Chinese hotel development goes, aiming to rival Beijing and Shanghai with the number of luxury hotels and available rooms, but in only a fraction of the time.
– What brands will open there?
Conrad and Doubletree by Hilton will both open next to each other by the end of this year. Conrad will be a 101 all-villa property while the 450-room Doubletree by Hilton will offer a 1,290 sqm ballroom that can be used by both properties.
Renaissance Sanya Resort and Spa will open with 507 rooms in early 2011, while Fairmont Haitang Bay Resort will also open with 702 guestrooms, including 50 one- and two-bedroom villa suites and an 860 sqm ballroom.
Shangri-La Sanya will open in late 2012 with 508 rooms, while Kempinski will also open a new property in the area after handing back the management rights of its Sanya Bay hotel. The opening date is yet to be confirmed.
– Any other openings planned?
Solid information is difficult to come by, but rumours from among Sanya’s hotel industry is that Langham, Sofitel, Grand Hyatt and St. Regis all have hotels in the pipeline.
Haitang Bay is aiming to open around 40 five-star hotels. Or it could be 30 or 50, nobody quite seems to know. However according to a Sanya government report on the development of this area, the Haitang Bay project is essential as the other main beaches areas such as Yalong Bay are already full.
