Despite many promotions, policies and offers having been unveiled for the upcoming National Day Golden Week celebrations, there has been a poor market response in Hainan, as the level of hotel reservations in Sanya this year is just over 40%.

On 2nd August, the State Council introduced a policy which enabled mini buses free access within the Spring Festival, Pure Bright Festival, International Labor Day and National Day. Most provinces in China passed the policy by late September in order to promote holiday travel. Another deal which lowered ticket prices about 37% for 80 scenic spots has also been on offer.

At the moment, judging from the route of most travel agencies, cities in the South-east, South-west and North-west of China are the most popular destinations. It is estimated that weather is a large reason for why tourists have held back from travelling, since the weather of Hainan during the holiday is expected to not be as nice as in other major cities.

However statistics have also revealed that stagger-time travel and outbound tourism are the main reasons contributing to the recession.

Package holidays to Thailand for 6 days are RMB 2,800, and 10 days in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand is only RMB 4,880. These packages don’t cost much more than domestic tourism packages, so outbound tourism will no doubt continue to grow in popularity. Besides this, some tourists have said that they would prefer to visit Hainan after the National Holiday so as to avoid the peak tourism period.
