Since September 1st the Sanya tourism authority has handed out 3 million coupons in five domestic cities in a bid to attract visitors to spend their holidays in Sanya.

The coupons were distributed in five major Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu and Guangzhou.

From September 1st to October 7th this year, after purchasing items valued over 15 yuan at any FamilyMart in those cities, buyers will be able to receive one of the coupons with a basic value of 800 yuan.

The coupons will be valid till August 31st, 2013. Visitors to Sanya will be able to get certain discounts at hotels and tourist sites.

The measure is part of city’s plan to boost tourism, an aim which has been supported by local hotels. To date, a total of 10 5-star hotels in Sanya have taken part in the program. Each hotel is committed to offering 30 rooms to promote the project.

Tang Sixian, the Vice Director of the Sanya Tourism Development Commission, said the activity was different from other market strategies that placed more focus on a core base of steady groups, city white-collar workers and families that will need some persuasion to choose Sanya as a holiday destination.
