Sanya in Hainan, China

Sanya view

Sanya is the only tropical island in China, with a year round balmy climate, clean air and seas, beautiful scenery combined with an increasingly sophisticated tourism service sector makes Hainan Island, and Sanya in particular, the up and coming destination in Asia.

The city of Sanya sits on the southern coast of Hainan Island, China’s most southerly province. A tropical seaside resort in the South China Sea, closer to Vietnam than it is to the Chinese Mainland.

Hainan Island was once a place of outlaws, pirates and exiles, a wild and undesirable place, sitting on the very edge of the Chinese civilised world.

Today, the island still retains its wild side, and in many ways feels more like parts of South East Asia than China.

But the wild side is now part of its charm and Hainan has become the newest hotspot in Asia for both mainland Chinese tourists and visitors from overseas.

The only tropical island in China, with a year round balmy climate, clean air and seas, beautiful scenery combined with an increasingly sophisticated tourism service sector makes Hainan Island, and Sanya in particular, the up and coming destination in Asia.

Sanya has world class hotels, a full calendar of high profile events and increasing numbers of small businesses geared to providing specialist activities and tours to tourists from China and beyond.

Brief History

Sanya sits at the confluence of three rivers that flow down from the mountains and jungles of Hainan’s interior – the name Sanya (三亚) refers to these three rivers.

The city has only recently become more than a small fishing and trading port, but despite Sanya’s relatively recent establishment there have been human settlements in the area reaching back to the stone age – relics of these early settlements were recently unearthed at Luobi Cave in 1992.

The original county capital of Yacheng, further down the coast to the west, has a history of more than 2000 years and served as an administrative centre and capital of the ancient prefecture of Yazhou.

Ethnic Groups

Sanya’s population is a unique mix of various ethnic groups. The Han Chinese make up about 67% of the population, the rest is comprised of minority peoples, notably the Li, the Miao and the Hainan Hui.
