The general history of Sanya
Sanya has some of the oldest history in China
The ancient name of Sanya is Yazhou (literally means cliff state). Yazhou history can be dated back to Qin Dynasty (221 BC – 206 BC, more than 2200 years ago). Since then, it is always within the territory of the following dynasties of China. Being the tropical Ultima Thule of China, it is so remote from the capital of China.
Therefore it is always called Tianyahaijiao, which means the end of the sky and ocean in Chinese. Some Prime ministers in various dynasties were here in exile. In Tang Dynasty, an enlightened monk named Jiangzhen accidently sailed here and used this place as one of his harbours for his long Buddhism-missionary journey to Japan

In Jin Dynasty, it was part of Hepu Province

Southern and Northern Dynasties.

Yacheng (now part of Sanya) was established as the provincial administrative capital of Yazhou State in Liang Dynasty (AD502-557) in the period of Southern and Northern Dynasties.

Yacheng (now part of Sanya) became the administration center of Linzhen Shire (with five counties)

Tang Dynasty
|
Yacheng (now part of Sanya) was the administration center of Zhen State (with Jiyang county and other four counties)

Song Dynasty
|
Yacheng (now part of Sanya) was the administration center of Ya State (Cliff State). Ya State was renamed Zhuya Jun and then Jiyang Jun.

Yuan Dynasty
|
Yacheng (now part of Sanya) was part of Qiongzhou Si and then the region of Libinwanghu Fu

Ming Dynasty
|
Yacheng (now part of Sanya) was the administration center of Ya State (Cliff State), which was under the administrative supervision of Qiong State and Guangdong Province.

Qing Dynasty
|
Yacheng (now part of Sanya) was the administration center of Ya State (Cliff State), which was under the administrative supervision of Qiong State and Guangdong Province. In 1905, Ya State was renamed Zhili State.

|
Zhili State was renamed Ya County.

|
People’s Republic of China
|
Yacheng (now part of Sanya) was the administration center of Ya County. In 1984, Ya County was renamed Sanya .
|
On September 26, 1987, Sanya was established as a city (of Di administrative level) by the approval of the State Council of China.
