Combined with the local traditional culture of Li ethnic people, the Shuinan Village is quite unique.

Historical records show that after the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), the Yacheng Ancient Town was once a destination for exile officials and scholars. From the Tang Dynasty (618-907) to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), more than 20 deposed government officials, scholars and literati were exiled to this place.

Shuinan Village, influenced by the deposed officers, gradually became a scholarly village. Thus the designation “No.1 Ancient Cultural Village of Hainan” was conferred on Shuinan Village. During the Song Dynasty, Yazhou Academy was established as China’s southernmost institution of higher learning back then. The result was hundreds of scholars coming out from this remote town, entering the political and cultural stage, where they displayed their talent and fulfilled their ambitions.

The village was once a destination that offered refuge to Monk Jianzhen (688-763BC) and his Japan-bound fleet and was a stop on the Maritime Silk Road. It’s also where Huang Daopo (1245-1330), China’s textile founder, learnt weaving skills from the Li people during the Yuan Dynasty.
