For Jim Khoo, working on the tropical island of Sanya is his career ambitions to a greater height by joining Marriott’s Renaissance brand in Hainan.
"It is great to work in such a beautiful area," says Jim Khoo, a Singaporean-born hotelier who has been at the helm of Renaissance Sanya Resort & Spa since 2014.
Set on a stretch of pristine beach in the luxury resort area of Haitang Bay, the Renaissance Sanya Resort & Spa is the first resort of lifestyle Renaissance brand under Marriott in China, as well as a tropical palace with breathtaking oriental design features reflecting its locale in tropical Hainan Island, giving the hotel a wonderful sense of place.
The architecture of the 507-room Renaissance Sanya Resort & Spa takes inspiration from the grandeur of an emperor’s palace and the beauty of the tropical setting. The low-rise resort hugs the coastline and is arranged in village-like clusters to maximize the amazing views at every turn. Eighty-five percent of the guestrooms enjoy ocean views and the remaining rooms boast superb garden and mountain views. Pitched terracotta roofs and the rhythmic stepping of the guestroom buildings echo the forms of the surrounding hills.
The hotelier, whose career spans more than 20 years in China, began his career in Qingdao in 1995, and he has served in various management capacities in some of the world’s renowned hotel corporations in international hotel groups Marriott, IHG, Shangri-La, Hyatt, etc. before helming Renaissance Sanya Resort & Spa.
Professionalized in Sales & Marketing, in both hotel pre-opening and operation, Mr. Khoo has profound knowledge of Chinese tourism market and is very familiar with Chinese cultures. Mr. Khoo sees great potential from the indigenous, intriguing and independent features of Renaissance Sanya Resort & Spa.
In 2014, Renaissance Sanya Resort & Spa was selected as the main conference venue out of all the international five-star hotels in Haitang Bay, for World Travel & Tourism Council and was awarded by Hainan Tourism Bureau as “2014 WTTC Qualified Service Company”.
His exposure has been in several countries for more than 20 years but he spent most of the last 20 years in China. He has been successful in integrating multiple cultures and dynamically developing local nationals to executive level positions.
Bearing a positive outlook in life, and fervor for his chosen profession, he has received various commendations for his works, becoming an inspiration to his fellow hoteliers. His extensive experience in the hotel industry coupled with his focus on operational excellence makes him ready to lead the hotel to another adventure of discovery.
