Favorite places to enjoy bright full moon during Mid-Autumn Festival in Sanya
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional festival family in China when families usually get together. The Mid-Autumn Festival is all about celebrating the full moon and Sanyaers like to engage in an activity called "Shang Yue," that is, "appreciating the moon”.
This is achieved by locating oneself at a vantage point with a clear view of the moon or wide open spaces and gazing at it, preferably while munching on mooncakes.
Here are seven favorite places to moon-gaze around Sanya this Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on September 8th, 2014.
1. Favorite beach spots:
Dadonghai 大东海
Dadonghai is one of the popular beaches for locals in Sanya to admire the full moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
On the moon-gazing night, the beach will be brimful of many residents and tourists to celebrate the festival with burning wax treatment.
People congregating with family and friends to engage in a spot of treatment will place a bunch of waxes and candles around a moon cake tinbox and light them, as well as eating evening picnics and barbecues on the beach to see the full moon.
Sanya Bay 三亚湾
For people who like to walk along the beach and gaze at the moon on Mid-Autumn night, and Sanya Bay is one of the best places to do this.
At Sanya Bay, soft moonlight and gentle street lamps illuminate fantastic hotels and commercial buildings. Families may walk along the oceanside to enjoy the evening at this famous “Coconut Corridor”, an experience which is unique in Sanya. It is also a popular spot for couples seeking a private romantic interlude after family reunion dinners.
Houhai Beach后海
Houhai Bay provides a good view of sky to admire the full moon. You can sit and listen to the waves whilst moon watching.
The scenery definitely makes up for the inconvenience in getting there, though you can always opt to stay a night at the hostels in the region. Or you can barbecue with a bunch of friends at the beach parties, go surfing or set up campfire along the beach.
2. Getting high
Luhuitou Park 鹿回头公园
This is a real getaway from the city. Located in the Luhuitou Peninsular southwest of Sanya, the Park is 275 meters high. If you want an incredible natural view of Sanya, either drive up or do some solid trekking.
The backdrop is of Sanya’s mountainous terrain — there won’t be any bright neon lights to compete with the moon. This is perfect for mountain fanatics who prefer a quiet experience.
Cao Miao Café & Bar 早苗咖啡吧
If you really want that on-top-of-the-world experience but can’t afford the time or energy to hike up a mountain, then rooftop bars are your best bet. Of course the view can be obstructed with people milling around with drinks, but sometimes we prefer a drink over a hike.
Located on the 11th Floor of a residential building in Sanya Bay, there is Cao Miao Café & Bar, where you can enjoy a drink, chitchat with your friends and gaze at the moon.
3. Verdant views
Egret Park 白鹭公园
with lush lawns and green trees, the Egret Park is one of the best places to appreciate the full moon in the city. When the full moon climbs high in the sky, families stroll together through the park and soak up festive atmosphere.
Gaze at the moon with locals jogging about around you, although you will have to search for a spot where the moon isn’t blocked by the trees.
