Luhuitou Peak Garden in Sanya, Hainan

Luhuitou Peak Garden, located on the tip of Luhuitou (鹿回头) peninsula, is noted for being an excellent place to appreciate the sunrise and sunset, and overlook the downtown area of Sanya City.

Luhuitou literally means a deer looking back. There is a moving folklore about the Peninsula. Long time ago, a young hunter came across a charming deer. He chased the deer for about nine days and nights. Having reached the Luhuitou cliff edge, the deer found no way to escape except by leaping into the sea under a cliff. When the hunter got ready to shoot, the deer turned her head back and changed into a beautiful girl. Surprisingly, the deer was originally a girl and fond of the excellent character of the young man. She took a fancy to the seaside and led the man here in the guise of a deer. They fell in love and later settled in a village here. Hence the peninsula and the village are all named Luhuitou. Sanya City is also referred to as ‘Deer City’.
