Sanya, a bird sanctuary and bird watching paradise for tourists

Sanya attracts growing number of bird lovers each year. This popular family-friendly tropical tourist city boasts wonderful environment and plenty of food for birds. Robert Swinhoe, an early birder who was a British consul in Amoy (modern-day Xiamen) around 1850s, made the first systematical birdwatching and recording on Hainan Island. Nowadays, more and more people join the group of bird lovers. They enjoy watching birds, recording their varieties, capturing beautiful pictures of the local birds.

Lovers of birds can find various birds living along the stunningly beautiful rivers that running through the city, in the mangrove wood at the river banks. Sanya is a sanctuary for an enormous range of birds. It is also the breeding ground for many rare birds. At present the birds that can be seen in Sanya mainly consist of egretta garzetta, ardeola bacchus, bubulcus ibis, white-rumped shama, pale blue-flycatcher, hainan blue-flycatcher，green-billed malkoha, and red-headed trogon.
