White sand beaches, blue waters and palm trees don’t immediately come to mind when you think of China. But Hainan, the country’s most southerly province and second largest island after Taiwan, boasts all three. And Dazhou Island, in Hainan’s Shimei Bay, is one of the best places to take advantage of these all these features.

Located at the southeast off the coast of Wanning City, Dazhou Island, also called Bird’s Nest Island, covers an area of 4.36 square kilometers, and is the largest island off the coast of Hainan.

It is also the only home to China’s unique Jinsi Swallow. The well-known edible Dazhou bird’s nests are produced in this island.

Dazhou Island is also a popular sightseeing location, which is divided into southern mountain and northern mountain with a 500-meter long beach in-between. These mountains, the tallest of which is 289 meters above sea level, have been used as navigational markers by mariners since the Tang Dynasty.

Around these islands, the water visibility is up to 10 meters under the sea. It also has rich marine life like squid, tuna, swordfish, yellowtail fish, octopus, lobster, abalone, seahorse, sea urchins, and other kinds of specious marine creatures. The richness and variety of marine life is unique here.

And leisure is what most visitors arriving on island’s shores are interested in. With a warm, temperate climate year round, swimming is always on the agenda. The tropical marine zone surrounding the island means snorkelers and divers are treated to colorful fish, conches, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and plumes of coral.

If the underwater world is not your thing, there’s plenty to explore on land. The western coastline is made up of dramatic boulders and cliff faces that look as through they might tumble into the sea. Meanwhile, many varieties of flora and fauna reside on Dazhou Island, with its amazingly clear waters and beautiful mountain scenery.

Visitors who want more than a day trip can also bring their own tents to stay on the island. On this island, visitors also can enjoy the wonderful sunrise and observe the marvelous sunset.
