If you want to venture out of Qiongzhong, Hainan, and get up close and personal with nature, Limu Mountain Forest Park is highly recommended. An excursion into the foothills surrounding the region can yield quite a few surprises.

About 165 kilometers from Haikou, Limu Mountain Forest Park (黎母山森林公园) is situated in Qiongzhong County of central Hainan Province. With its highest altitude at 1,411 meters, it covers an area of 12,900 hectares, among which natural forest accounts for 7,300 hectares.

Biologically speaking, Limu Mountain is rich in tropical biological resources, including more than 2,000 kinds of plants and 58 kinds of rare or endangered wild animals.

Limu Mountain is a sacred place for the Li nationality people, the earliest inhabitants of Hainan Province, who still retain a simple lifestyle with unique traditional customs. As one of the three great mountains in Hainan, Limu Mountain features numerous waterfalls.

Climbing up the winding roads into the hills, you will be struck by the beauty of the area. The verdant hills are nothing like the slightly dusty facades one sees from the city. The air is fresh, carrying the scent of tropical and sub-tropical trees and wildflowers growing on the slopes. If you are lucky enough to have a bright, sunny day, then shifting powder-puff clouds casting shadows on the rolling hills will surely amaze you.

It is the source of three great rivers in Hainan: Nandu River, Wanquan River and Changhua River. Every morning, thousands of brooks leap down the mountainside from an altitude of more than 1,000 meters above sea level, which is quite spectacular.

The Park consists of five areas: Yingge Basin, Jinxiu Valley, Tianhe Pool, Diaodengling Ridge and Limu Stone Statue. Each area is basically covered with virgin forest.

It is good start to climb Limu Mountain from the Limu Mountain Forest Park administration office, which is about 16 kilometers from the park gate. However, a guide is recommended as there are many forks in the trail and it is easy to get lost in the forest.

People living in cities so easily miss the natural possibilities on their doorstep. If you get stuck in traffic jams and if you want to have a place to escape shortly from your busy life, Mount Limu will never let you down.
