Explore hidden natural beauty at Jianfengling Park in Ledong, Hainan
Hainan is known as a tropical paradise for a number of factors, and its beaches and blue skies are two of the most well known of these reasons. Another reason that Hainan is so revered as a tropical getaway is the abundance of tropical rainforests that it has to offer visitors.
Though remote and hidden far away from convenient transport links, some of them are actually easy to reach and offer unique natural interests and high commendations. Of these areas, Jianfengling National Forest Park is recommended.
Located in the southwest of Hainan Island in Ledong County, Jianfengling National Forest Park is 90 kilometers away from Sanya City. The park covers 1,600 hectares and was established in 1992 to preserve the rainforest and the rare animals living there. Thus far, it is the largest, most preserved, tropical rainforest in China.
The trail includes boardwalks and stairs to get you over the most difficult terrain, but for the most part it is natural and just challenging enough to make it enjoyable.
The scenic area is illustrated by detailed descriptions of tropical rainforest phenomenon and precious tree species, which enables tourists to learn while enlightening their spirits.
The tour to Jianfengling Park is highlighted by Tian Chi, which literally means “Heaven’s Lake”. As expected, its extraordinarily serene surface creates a perfect reflection of the sky – as well as the rainforest-covered mountains – above.
Thanks to its rainforest surroundings and its altitude some 600m above sea level, Tian Chi is often shrouded in mist. One of the most beautiful times to see this is at dawn. As the fog rises over the lotus-spotted lake, the only sounds are birds chirping and a determined rooster crowing in the distance.
It takes about two and a half hours to hike to the 1,412m-high mountain peak. On a clear day, climbers will be rewarded with a dynamic view of the fantastic rain forests, especially at sunrise or sunset.
The best time to visit is between the months of November and April as you can appreciate the most beautiful landscapes on more sunny days. Do remember to wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants, as there are many leeches on the way.
Accommodation: Another advantage of visiting the park is an easy access to the nearby resorts, which are about 10 km away on the way down from the Tian Chi (Heaven’s Lake).
Traffic: Take long-distance buses at Sanya Central Bus Station at Jiefang Road to the Huangliu Town. Then take the tricycle, the only mode of transport from the town to the park entrance; or hire a taxi to reach the scenic spot. The whole journey takes about 1.5 hours.
