According to the National Tourism Administration, Haikou enjoyed greater tourist satisfaction than Sanya in 2012.

From February 9 to 15, 2013, Haikou received 587,000 domestic and international tourists, 208,200 of them overnight visitors, up 15% from the same period of last year. The average room occupancy rate in Haikou reached 55.02%, an increase of 2.3% compared with last year.

As the only option for driving in and out of Hainan, Haikou is an important transportation hub for self-driving tourism. The number of self-driving vehicles traveling in and out of Hainan Island during the spring festival holiday reached 76,000, up 66.6% on the same period of last year, and the number of vehicles entering Hainan accounted for 41,000, up 55.8% from the same period of last year, transporting a total of more than 200,000 passengers.

A random survey showed that 15% of tourists visiting Hainan this year were from Guangdong, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Zhejiang. Besides, the number of self-driving tourists from Henan and the north of China also increased.

In addition, islanders traveling around Hainan became a new highlight of Hainan tourism during the Spring Festival travel peak.
