The sea view in Hainan
Almost a year after being classified as an "International Tourism Island" by the government, Hainan Province in southern China is undergoing massive tourism development, both in infrastructure construction and policy.
According to Lu Zhiyuan, director of Hainan Provincial Tourism Development Commission, Hainan East Ring Intercity Rail from Haikou to Sanya will open December 5 and West Ring Intercity Rail will soon to start construction.
About 30 new five-star hotels are underway and should open within two years.
A space theme park is being planned for 2014/2015 and eight visitor centers in Haikou and 10 in Sanya are under construction.
Hainan’s provincial government has also increased the number of visa-free countries allowed to visit the island from 21 to 26 and has extended longer stays for foreigners.
