Dongshanling Ridge, the Mount No.1 in Hainan
 
Rising up from the middle of Hainan Island near Wanning, Dongshanling Ridge is considered as "Mount No.1 in Hainan." With beautiful landscapes and local specialties, Dongshanling is one of the best attractions on Hainan’s eastern coast.

It was once called Mt. Pen-holder for the shape is like a pen-holder. With an area of 10 square kilometers, the Ridge is made up of three peaks, among which the highest is 184 meters above sea level. It is equally well-known with Luhuitou Park, and Tianya Haijiao in Hainan Province.

Around Dongshanling Ridge, we come to Dongshanling Ridge Scenic Spot, which enjoys splendid natural scenery and unique scenery of humanities.

Natural scenery

Cliffs with green trees, spring water, soothing wind, beautiful flowers, wide-spread stone views and rare caves all beckon visitors.

An ideal destination for day-hikers and photographers, Dongshanling Ridge Scenic Spot is a rock-strewn crest regarded for its rich forest cover, assorted wildlife and silent caves.

Scenery of humanities

Dong Shan Ridge Scenic Spot is filled with rare stones and the view is gorgeous. The top eight scenic spots are well-known home and abroad. Historical sites and temples on the ridge are key cultural relics under provincial protection.

"Flying Stone"


One of Dongshanling Ridge’s more interesting sights is the "Flying Stone" (Feilai Shi). This stone is more than ten meters high and wide, and weighs over a hundred tons. This gigantic stone perches rather precariously and when the wind blows, it shakes slightly, but it never tumbles down the mountain. Other strangely-shaped stones are dotted around the area.

Temples

Buddhism is the main region in Dongshanling Ridge .Caves and grottoes can be found around here too and calligraphic stone inscriptions and temples can be found among the mountain’s cultural relics.

Chao Yin Temple, Dong Ling Temple, Natural Stone Temple are placed with Buddha statues. Especially in Chao Yin Temple, (famous with overseas Chinese throughout Southeast Asia) numerous visitors flock there to show their respect all year around. Scenic spots like Laughing Buddha Temple, Li Gang Statue, and Dragon Cave Maze are highly praised by visitors.

Local specialties

In recent years, modern luxury hotels and on-water restaurant have been built in Dongshanling Ridge where the delicious foods are famous over the country.

Zhegu tea

Zhegu tea (also known as Lingzi Cao) is made from wild tea trees and has a wonderful flavor and aroma.

Dongshan Mutton

Donfgshan sheep are said to eat the local wild tea and other special plants found in mountain caverns, thus the lamb here is said to be particularly tasty. In fact, Dongshan Sheep were a precious commodity used in political and religious tributes to important persons during the Song Dynasty. Hele Crab, Houan Queen Fish, Gangbei Prawn and Dongshan Pancake are playing an important role in Hainan famous food.

Best Travel Time


Wanning is in the southeast of Hainan Province and is near South Sea. Being the tropical marine monsoon climate, it is moist, full of sunshine and plentiful rainfall. Because the temperature difference in a year is not much, it is like in spring all year around. The annual average temperature is about 24C. So visitors can go here all the year and the best time is from March to November.

Getting there

By bus
Visitors can take express bus at Haikou East Bus Station to Wanning City, and then by bus to reach the scenic spot.

Other means

You can take a motorcycle or pedicab from Wanning City center to reach the scenic spot. It takes about 30 minutes.

Something to pay attention to

Visitors who choose to travel to Wanning from August to October had better be alert of typhoon.
