Nature-created & man-enhanced scenery at Nanli Lake in Ding’an, Haikou
Nanli Lake, Ding’an, Haikou
Nanli Lake (南丽湖) is a famous scenic site in Haikou City, located in Ding’an County, about 40 kilometres from Haikou. The lake covers roughly 46 square kilometres and with a very pleasant average water temperature of around 22C it is nice for a dip all year round.
It is a large man-made lake, which was constructed by the people of Ding’an in 1958. Essentially built by accident, the original intention of the project was to construct a reservoir on the opposing side, what ended up happening however was the water gathered in the valley and became what is today’s Nanli Lake and the mountains in the area became the islands in the lake.
The islands in Nanli Lake are very unique; there are 13 islands and five peninsulas in all. The shapes of the islands are varied, with square, oblong and round ones scattered throughout the lake. With lush subtropical forests and beautiful wildlife Nanli lake is a wonderfully diverse and fascinating area, which is well worth a visit.
