The typically Hong Kong pastime called yam cha, which originated with the Cantonese in southern China, has over the centuries transformed brunch or lunch into social gatherings, business meetings and family bonding affairs.

A typical dim sum brunch or lunch includes various types of steamed buns such as cha siubaau, dumplings and rice noodle rolls (cheong fun), which contain a range of ingredients, including beef, chicken, pork, prawns and vegetarian options. Plates of steamed green vegetables, roasted meats, congee porridge and other soups can be ordered on the side. Dessert dim sum is also available which includes the customary egg tart.
