5 Days into Sanya eating nothing but Hainan-style seafood and Xinjiang cuisine, my wife and I were craving some good Western food. On one of our last days in Sanya, we decided to rent a car to go site-seeing – overall not too bad but when lunch time came around, we asked the driver to recommend a place for Western food. We lowered our expectations substantially and wow, what a surprise…!

Walking into Dolphin Sports Bar & Grill, my wife was immediately brought back to her college days in Texas. Sports memorabilia on the walls, high stools to sit on, pool table, top-40 hits playing softly in the background. It was a blast from the past in… of all places.. Hainan, China. A quick glance at the menu and there was everything from Shepherd’s Pie, 10 kinds of Burgers, and even some Mexican food. Naturally we were very excited and we had to remind ourselves that we were still in Hainan so expectations had to be kept low.

With that in mind, our meals arrived quickly – one Swiss Cheese Burger and one order of Beef Ribs. The burger was tasty but a little dry. The meat of the ribs fell off the bone and were a delight. It was the first time in 5 days in Sanya where I really felt comfortable ordering a nice cold beer! We were so impressed that we ended up staying for over 2 hours just testing different things on the menu. Our two-year old son had a large helping of Mac & Cheese which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Waitresses all spoke some English with one of the head managers speaking very fluent English. Smiles, good selection and quality of food, and at a very reasonable price! For those of you looking for a good Western place in the city, Dolphin is a NECESSITY before you head home.
