The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) has started the 100-day countdown to the destination’s scheduled hosting of the third stopover leg of the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race.

Due to get underway in the Spanish city of Alicante on 29 October, the round-the-world sailing challenge will visit Cape Town before heading to Abu Dhabi between 30 December this year and 14 January 2012.

A fortnight of activities will be taking place at the emirate’s Destination Village complex, where construction infrastructure was recently completed in preparation for the event.

Seven permanent yacht pontoons have been installed and will house the participating teams’ state-of-the-art vessels.

The ADTA is also organising an entertainment programme to coincide with the race’s stopover, including exhibitions, game zones, sailing academies and concerts.

After visiting Abu Dhabi, the Volvo Ocean Race will head on to the Chinese port of Sanya, Auckland in New Zealand, the Brazilian city of Itajai and Miami in the US, before crossing the Atlantic for stops in Lisbon, Lorient and Galway.
