Team Sanya to compete in Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012
After being one of the stopovers for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, Sanya will have its representative yacht, Team Sanya, participating in the race, reports xinhuanet.com.
Team Sanya is the seventh world-class contender to join this year’s race, which is also the only competing Chinese yacht for this new round of the race.
Mike Sanderson, a two-time New Zealander winner of the Volvo Ocean Race will lead Team Sanya with a crew that mixes experienced sailors with several Chinese members to chase the championship.
“It will be a valuable opportunity for me to race under the flag of such a great country and culture.”, said Sanderson.
As one of the stopovers for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, construction of the stopover, which is located at Luhuitou Bay, is expected to complete at the end of August. Upon its completion, it will become a world-class sailing marina.
