CrossFit star aims to become ‘fittest man on the planet’
PERSONAL trainer Brandon Swan is not content with being fit. He wants to be the fittest man on the planet.
And to win the title he will have to take part in a competition that requires strength, agility and just a hint of reckless abandon – the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games.
The event features three days of intense CrossFit competition which includes a mix of aerobic exercise, body weight exercise, gymnastics, and Olympic weight-lifting.
To qualify for the world titles, the West Ipswich fitness facility owner competed against thousands of competitors from Australia and New Zealand to finish third.
It was the second year in a row that Mr Swan has qualified for the international event.
What’s more impressive is that the 22-year-old, who celebrated his birthday last week, is believed to be the youngest male competitor taking part in this year’s games.
"I was told I was the youngest participant at last year’s world CrossFit competition and managed to finish 42nd," he said.
"This year I feel a lot stronger and a much more well-rounded athlete and am looking to place in the top 15."
To prepare for the event, Mr Swan said he spent five to six hours each day training.
"We began the international competition last year by doing a triathlon running up and over a mountain … we actually had to scale the mountain," he said.
Mr Swan said a lot of his friends thought he was crazy for signing up to compete in the extreme event each year but he loved it.
The fitness fanatic’s final hurdle is to now raise enough funds to be able to head overseas and compete in the games which take place in California next month.
