Rooftop Velodrome (NL Architects)
 
 
A firm of architects based in Amsterdam has incorporated a rooftop velodrome into the design of a ‘Bike Club’ it has been asked to design by its client on a major resort complex it is working on in China’s southernmost city, Sanya.

According to NL Architects, the bowl shaped roof is doubly functional – not only does it house the track itself, but it also provides shade for the café and cycle hire station underneath.

The design is said to be inspired by the shape of a pagoda – although we can’t help feeling that it must also owe something to the rooftop testing track in the former Fiat factory at Lingotto in Turin, as featured in classic British movie, The Italian Job.

Sanya, which enjoys a tropical climate and is one of China’s biggest tourist resorts, lies some 600 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong.
