People in 50s rate sex more highly than those in 30s
Popular: The over 50s rated sex third in their list of the pastimes that they most regularly enjoyed doing
It found that after gardening and eating out, passion is the third most popular pastime for people in their 50s. For nearly one in five of them (18 per cent), it topped the list.
For those in their 30s, the most popular pastimes were going to the gym, eating out and watching television.
Sex came tenth on the list in this age group, with only 3 per cent rating it as their favourite activity.
The favourite pastimes of the over-50s reflect a trend towards simpler pleasures in tough economic times.
Traditional middle-age treats such as cruises and holidays did not feature in the top ten, while exercise did. Walking came fourth.
Commenting on the survey of 1,000 people, conducted for a company that makes a medical exercise device, Birmingham GP Dr Andy Carson said: ‘An active sex life is great for keeping fitness levels up.
‘The outdated concept of too old for sex has been eradicated.
‘I encourage all my patients over 50 to keep their sex lives active where possible and it seems they are taking this on board.’
Christine Morris, 54, of Lichfield, Staffordshire, said that since hitting 50 and with her children having left home, sex had gone up on her list of priorities.
‘Quality time with my husband is a top priority, as well as keeping fit,’ she said. ‘An active sex life keeps me feeling young.’
