Nanshan Dongtian Park is featured with Taoist culture. It lies in the west of Sanya, 40 kilometers away from the city center. The park also has the name of the Fairyland (or the Small Cave) or the wonders of the mountain and the sea. This place was discovered by the Ji Yang Army in Song Dynasty (Sanya was called Ji Yang in Song Dynasty, later changed to Yazhou). They made the stone carvings of "Record on the Stone Boat", which has a history of over 800 years. Dozens of years later, futher development was carried out. The spot was the oldest sightseeing area that had been constructed by the officials in the ancient times. So, there are a lot of myths, historical records, and poems about the wonderful sights of the mountain and the sea. Yhe verses can be seen everywhere in the area, which were carved on the cliffs from successive dynasties. So, you can say that among the tourist spots in Sanya, the Dongtian Park carries the longest history and the most profound culture.
The beauty of sea-mountain wonders is reflected in the ripple blue seawater and the vast expanse of sea; the beauty of rocks lies on the beach as if made by human with superlative craftsmanship; the beauty of mountains dances with the green forest, deep clouds, strange rocks, and deep caves. You can see the four big Chinese characters "Hai Shan Qi Guan", meaning wonders of the mountain and the sea. You also can see the carvel inscriptions below. They have stories. When an army official Mao Kui in Song Dynasty came to develop the sightseeing area, he exploited mountains, built roads and pavilions, and carved characters on the cliffs. He gave the name "Fishing Terrace" and "Small Cave". He wrote the characters "Hai Shan Qi Guan" to name the scenic area. Going around the huge rock by the stairways, there will be another scene. Looke at the two long stones. They are called "Sword Testing Stones". They were cut apart by two travelers, Zhou Kang and Xu Yuan, to test ther swords.
When Jiang Zemin, the former general secretary of the Party, made an inspection tour in Hainan, he came to this place. He has left the inscriptions out of his feeling. The English translation is "The blue sea meets the sky afar, and Hainan is in spring all the year round". This verse describes the beautiful sceneries of Sanya and Hainan, and bears the meaning far beyond. The verse contains the beautiful sceneries of the great nature in Hainan, the social reality of reform and opening up in Hainan, as well as the sincere expectation that the Party Central Committee has on the Hainan’s future. The leader’s expectation is encouraging the Hainan people to work harder for a bright future.
