Liu Xiang celebrates hat trick in Asiad
Hurdler Liu Xiang successfully completed a hat trick of Asian Games titles in Guangzhou Wednesday, bagging China’s 172nd gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles.
However, concerns were growing as to whether the country’s unshakeable dominance is being gained at too high a price.
The superstar, whose sudden withdrawal from the Beijing Olympic Games shocked and saddened the nation, took the lead right from the start and stormed to victory with his best result of the season: 13.09 seconds.
The 27-year-old clenched his fists and waved to a deafening 80,000-strong crowd inside the Aoti Stadium in Guangzhou.
Having battled his Achilles tendon injury for 13 months, Liu made a much-awaited comeback in September 2009 and finished second at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix.
Liu’s crown helped host China continue its dominance at the Asiad with 173 golds so far, well ahead of South Korea with 71 golds in second place and third-placed Japan with 36 golds.
