China BlueChemical to bring on stream 2nd methanol plant in Hainan
China BlueChemical plans to bring onstream its second methanol plant on Hainan island, China, in September, a source close to the company said Monday, adding that the exact date was not yet clear.
The No. 2 plant will have the capacity to produce 800,000 mt/year of methanol, and was being built at the same site as the No. 1 plant, which has a methanol production capacity of 600,000 mt/year.
The No. 1 plant is currently running at full capacity, the source said.
Natural gas feedstock for the No. 1 plant comes from the offshore Dongfang 1-1 gas field, while feedstock for the No. 2 plant will come from the offshore Ledong gas field. Both fields are owned by China National Offshore Oil Corporation.
China BlueChemical is 60% owned by CNOOC.
China has close to 200 methanol producers, many of whom are small and use coal-gas as feedstock.
