MIllion Hills unveils Movie Town in Haikou
Leading stars of Chinese cinema gathered at Mission Hills Haikou on the tropical island of Hainan this weekend for the grand opening of the resort’s giant new tourist attraction, “Mission Hills • H. Brothers • Feng Xiaogang Movie Town”.
The facility, spanning 5.7 square kilometres and involving total investment of US$900 million, includes vintage street settings from famous movies, state-of-the-art film studios, an array of shopping and dining options and countless other entertainment and leisure features. It is expected to attract five million visitors per year.
Movie Town is a three-way collaboration between China’s premier leisure and lifestyle conglomerate, Mission Hills Group, acclaimed film director Feng Xiaogang, and the country’s biggest movie producers, Huayi Brothers Media.
Around 1,000 VIPs attended an Opening Ceremony, Red Carpet Reception and Gala Dinner at Movie Town on Saturday to mark the official unveiling and to celebrate Huayi Brothers’ 20th anniversary.
“The opening of the first phase of Movie Town is a major milestone for Mission Hills Group as we continue to expand and diversify our leisure and entertainment portfolio,” commented Chairman and CEO Dr. Ken Chu.
“Movie Town will further cement Mission Hills Haikou’s status as the premier lifestyle resort in Hainan and will be a huge attraction for the millions of tourists who visit the island each year from mainland China and overseas.
“We are delighted to partner with China’s greatest film director, Feng Xiaogang, and the country’s leading film production studio, Huayi Brothers, in this bold and innovative venture.”
The first phase of Movie Town features “1942 Street”, depicting Republican Era buildings in Chongqing as featured in Feng’s movie Back To 1942. A total of 91 buildings, covering 25,000 square metres, showcase the different architectural styles which prevailed at the time.
The Opening Ceremony on Saturday morning was held in the street’s Clock Tower Theatre and featured speeches from Dr. Chu, director Feng and Mr. Wang Zhongjun, Founder and Chairman of Huayi Brothers.
Saturday evening’s Gala Dinner was staged in one of Movie Town’s new 5,000-sq-metre film studios.
Besides Feng, other China celebrities attending included actors Ge You, Zhang Guoli and Huang Xiaoming, actresses Xu Fan, Song Dandan, Li Bingbing, Yao Chen and Angelababy, and singers Na Ying and Sun Nan.
Hong Kong was represented by martial arts superstar Jackie Chan, acclaimed actor-singer Andy Lau, actress Miriam Yeung and film director Tsui Hark.
When completed, Movie Town will feature two more districts, Nanyang Street and Old Beijing Street, a total of four giant film studios – including one sized at 8,000 square metres, bigger than a soccer field – and a collection of celebrity-themed boutique hotels.
Movie Town is just one of series of major construction projects at Mission Hills Haikou. Also nearing completion is Mission Hills New Town, with shopping malls, Lan Kwai Fong entertainment district, leisure facilities and three new hotels, the Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance and Hard Rock Hotel.
Mission Hills Haikou already features a 539-room hotel, 10 world-class golf courses and “The World’s Largest Spa Resort” as officially recognized by Guinness World Records.
Meanwhile, Mission Hills Shenzhen-Dongguan on the Chinese mainland is officially “The World’s Largest Golf Club” with 12 courses. A major shopping, leisure, business and residential hub, Centreville, is currently under construction at this resort.
