Hainan stamps – a journey of knowing them better

Stamp collecting or philately is a great way to know about the history of a particular country. Ask any stamp collector and he or she will tell you how special day covers, commemorative stamps and regular postage stamps can help someone to know about the milestones of a nation's history. The same holds true about China and its tropical resort province, Hainan.
For a stamp collector, collecting Hainan stamps can be extremely interesting and truly a learning experience. Since the foundation of the Hainan Special Economic Zone in 1988, China Post has issued nearly 40 sets of stamps on natural sceneries and humanities of Hainan.
The following stamps will really give you a short introduction of the noteworthy places of the island and help you get an insight into the island's cultural aspect, making your stamp collection a pleasant experience.
1.  This stamp was issued in 1963, showcasing the Hainan traditional Sanyuesan Festival of Li Minority.
2.       This stamp was issued in 1963, showcasing the Hainan’s regional insect species --- Libythea geoffroyi (紫喙蝶).
3.       This stamp was issued in 1980, in commemoration of Huang Daopo, a great weaver in Chinese history, who achieved her excellence by learning weaving techniques from the Li People in Hainan and promoted the popularity of these skills to mainland and led to the revolution in the textile manufacturing industry in China.
4.       This stamp issued in 1981, illustrating the beauty of Coconut Village of Changpo Township in Qionghai City.
5.        This stamp was issued in 1982, in commemoration of Song Qingling, who was hailed from Wenchang City, and became an influential political figure in China.
6.       This stamp was issued in 1988. They are the four popular tourist attractions in Hainan: Wuzhishan Mountain, Wanquan River, Tianyahaijiao and Luhuitou Park.  
7.       This stamp was issued in 1994, showcasing the tourist landmark of Luhuitou Park.
8.       This stamp was issued in 1998, showcasing the great development of Hainan Special Economic Zone, namely, Sanya Phoenix International Airport and Yalong Bay.
9.       This stamp was issued in 1998, showcasing the abundant tropical fish in South China Sea.
10.   This stamp was issued in 2001. This is the a species of Orchidaceae record from Hainan Island -- Paphiopedilum appletonianum (卷萼兜兰).
11.   This stamp was issued in 2002. This is the historical cultural relic Lingao Lighthouse, a long-standing international navigational point and a great destination for tourists.
12.   This stamp was issued in 2004. This is the Xinglong Overseas Chinese Farm of Wanning City, the largest farm for overseas Chinese in China.
13.   This stamp was issued in 2004. It is the magnificent Xisha Islands.
14.   This stamp was issued in 2005, in commemoration of Zhang Yunyi(张云逸), born in Wenchang City, a military strategist and senior general of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.  
15.   This stamp was issued in 2006. The fourth lighthouse is Mulantou Lighthouse (木栏头灯塔) located in Wenchang City. It is the fifth tallest lighthouse in the world, and the tallest in China.   
16.   This stamp was issued in 2007. It is the Hainan black-crested gibbon, a species of gibbon found only on Hainan Island.  
17.   This stamp was issued in 2008. They are the two popular tourist attractions in Boao, Qionghai City – Dongyu Island and Permanent Site of Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference. 
18.   This stamp was issued in 2009. This is the Dongpo Academy in Danzhou City, originally built in 1098 during the Northern Song Dynasty in memorial of Su Dongpo, a well-known poet. Dongpo Academy was once the highest seat of learning, and cultivation in Hainan.
19.   This stamp was issued in 2010, depicting the grand ballet ‘The red Detachment of Women', based on the true stories of the Red Detachment of Women on Hainan Island, the first army force of women in the Chinese revolutionary history. 
20.   This stamp was issued in 2013, depicting the rich oil resource in South China Sea.
