A Toronto man has been charged in the death of his former girlfriend, just over two weeks after parts of her body were found in two separate Ontario cities.

Peel Regional Police announced Monday that Chun Qi Jiang, 40, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Guang Hua Liu, 41.

Police said Jiang was arrested on Sunday, just over two weeks from the day that Liu was last seen alive.

"Mr. Jiang is a construction labourer and the recently estranged boyfriend of the victim,” said Insp. George Koekkoek.

"This investigation is ongoing and is far from over,” Koekkoek told a news conference at police headquarters in Mississauga.

Jiang lived in Scarborough near the townhome where Liu lived with her eldest son.

Neighbours told CBC News that police had recently been making inquiries about the garbage pickup routines in the area where Jiang lived.

Some of Liu’s remains have yet to be found.

Victim was with man for 4 years

Police said Jiang is a Canadian citizen of Chinese descent who arrived in Canada in 2002. He and Liu had a four-year relationship, according to police.

Liu was reported missing on Aug. 11. She was last seen alive the day before.

Last week, Peel Regional Police confirmed it was her remains that had been recovered from a river in Mississauga and a creek in Toronto. A severed head, a foot, two hands and other body parts were found in the Credit River and Highland Creek.

Liu, a Canadian citizen of Chinese descent, was a single mother of three. She had been operating a spa in a Scarborough mall, but the spa is no longer in business.

Friends said Liu was planning to sell her business after owning it only a few months. The evening she went missing, she was scheduled to meet a prospective buyer.
