HEAVILY armed police have entered Bali's notorious Kerobokan jail, home to Australian drug traffickers Schapelle Corby and the Bali Nine, to quell rioting prisoners and regain control of the facility.

Prison guards abandoned the jail overnight during a riot linked to the stabbing of an inmate and the arrest of three others on Sunday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed this afternoon, Australian time, that all Australian prisoners were safe.

Bali Police deputy chief Ketut Untung Yoga said today members of the riot squad, armed with shields and tear gas, had gone in to restore order.

"The police are already inside," Brigadier-General Yoga said.

"We didn't find any dead bodies yet and hopefully we don't. Our priority now is to put out the fires."

Hundreds more heavily-armed police and soldiers are on standby outside the jail, which is in a suburban area in Kerobokan, about a 30-minute drive from Bali's airport.

Ketut said authorities will try to resolve the situation without having to use force.

"We will try to negotiate," he said.

However, the prison's outgoing governor, Siswanto, told AAP the situation was "out of control".

He said the registration and administration blocks, near the entrance to the jail and close to where Bali Nine drug traffickers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran are housed, had been destroyed.

Siswanto is in Jakarta with his replacement, Bowo Nariwono.

Nariwono confirmed the riot broke out in response to rising tension in the jail triggered by the stabbing on Sunday of a prisoner and the subsequent arrest of three other inmates.

Prisoners began rioting about 11pm last night, throwing stones at the guards and setting alight furniture.

It appears they were able to gain access to offices in the jail, including some within metres of the entrance to the facility, but the outside walls remained intact.

Indonesian television showed pictures of fires burning in the offices just inside the front gate of the jail, which houses more than 1000 male and female prisoners.

Twelve Australians are held at Kerobokan, including the Bali Nine, the Gold Coast's Schapelle Corby, Sydney man Michael Sacatides and another man from Darwin, Graeme Pollock, who is awaiting sentencing on drugs charges.
