The family of a young Rivervale woman with burns to up to 60 per cent of her body were "inconsolable" at her hospital bedside yesterday as police described the arson attack on her as malicious, premeditated and horrendous.

A neighbour found the woman when he investigated a smoke alarm at the riverside apartment block in Tanunda Street.

Police said he found Dana Vulin, 25, distressed and smouldering in the doorway of her unit shortly after 6am.

Kensington Det-Sen. Sgt Chris Adams said firefighters called police about 6.30am.

"It appears her upper body and torso were set alight," Det-Sen. Sgt Adams said. "As to how she was set alight, we don't know."

He praised the neighbour and firefighters, saying they probably saved her life.

"The neighbour did an excellent job in looking after her until an ambulance arrived," he said. "He simply grabbed the female, took her into the shower and poured water on her to relieve the pain."

The neighbour said Ms Vulin was possibly in shock but she obviously needed help and seemed to be in pain.

"It appeared as if she had been burnt," he said. "I asked if there was a fire, took her in and put her in her shower."

He had someone call an ambulance and returned to wait with Ms Vulin until it arrived.

"It's not something you do every day but it wasn't traumatic other than the fact I was worried about her," the neighbour said.

"I was pleased when the ambulance arrived and took over."

Ms Vulin spoke to him but police would not reveal what she said.

Another neighbour described fire and smoke damage on carpet in the apartment and another said paramedics kept Ms Vulin covered as they took her to an ambulance on a stretcher.

Ms Vulin was in a critical but stable condition at Royal Perth Hospital last night after surgery to severe burns, largely on her head, face and upper torso.

Police urged anyone who saw anything suspicious between Belmont and Abernethy Road boat ramps, near Cracknell Park, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
