Read more on seasonal migrants in Hainan

In recent years, more than 80% of residential property was sold to non-local residents in Sanya.

According to a survey made in May and June last year, the “seasonal migrants”, namely a group of people from other provinces in China crowd to Sanya and other cities in Hainan for a warm winter for about one month to half a year, has become a special group in Hainan,

Due to the unique weather conditions and natural resources in Hainan, the “seasonal migrants” increased fast since 2006, hitting about 450,000 each year.

The “seasonal migrants”, mostly from the northern part of China, usually leave Hainan in the summer, which leads to the high rate in house vacancies in Hainan.

Besides, it brings great pressure on public service and social management in Hainan.

However, the “seasonal migrants” also boost the real estate market in Hainan, promote consumption growth and economic and cultural development in Hainan.

I am one of those "seasonal migrants" , but I come frome northern Europe , spending 5-6 months every year here , in the apartment I bought 2004.I face the following problem: being 72 yrs of age I realize that it may become difficult to continue this yearly back-and-forth- travelling.I would like to stay permanently. But getting a recidency permit here seems impossible.Asking around ,I am sent from one office to the next, where no-one seems to be able to make decisions. I do not look for work ! I simply want to stay in my apt .,pay tax to the community, use my pension money here.I have health insurance and therefore will not be a burden on the Chinese social system. So,if it is a problem with those empty apts , why make it so difficult fot those who want to stay here (even if we are "laowais" ? Other countries like Thailand, the Phillipines etc
welcome us . And yes , I realize I may have to change country to fulfil my hope for a quiet old age in a warm climate.
