A SHOUT in the middle of the night was the only indication of trouble before the stabbing death of a tomato picker at a Rushworth caravan park early yesterday.

Thy Sok, 37, of Springvale has been charged with murder following the incident at the Miner’s Pick Caravan Park in Neill Street about 1.30am yesterday.

He was arrested in Springvale about 9am.

Police have released few details about the victim, including any injuries he suffered, but say he was 27 years old.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the man had suffered stab wounds and was dead when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Miner’s Pick Caravan Park owner Pam, who withheld her surname, said the victim, the accused and a woman were occupying a caravan annexe.

“I heard a shout and then he (the victim) had been stabbed,” she said.

“He was the loveliest guy you would ever meet. He had been coming up here on and off for four years.

“They were both here working as they did occasionally. He (the victim) was working over Easter while he had a few days off.”

Pam said the dead man was Cambodian and from Melbourne but came to the area for seasonal fruit-picking work.

She said he had finished at one property on Tuesday but returned for the Easter weekend to pick a late harvest of tomatoes at a property at Rochester.

She said the man’s wife was visiting friends overseas.

Pam, who has owned the caravan park for 27 years, said the park was packed with Easter visitors, including many in town for Rushworth’s Easter parade and fair today.

But despite the tragedy, Pam said the mood in the town and the caravan park was buoyant.

“It’s very busy in town. Everyone’s setting up for the parade,” she said.

“I’ve owned the caravan park for years but I’ve never had this situation before. But  I'm too old. Everything just washes over me.”
