If you're planning to visit Hong Kong and are not in a mad rush, you could save loads of money by taking a train to Guangzhou and catching a bus from there to Hong Kong. A round trip journey this way costs under 900 yuan (if you get a hard sleeper, top bunk), compared to double the price if you fly to Hong Kong.
